If you can think of a modern classic or popular song from the last 30 years, chances are it finds it's way into one of these tracks. It's almost like "Name That Tune" as one blogger put it when describing the format of these tracks. The bits and pieces fly in and fly out and you have only seconds to recognize them. My stance on the metal genre is that much of my stance of the pro-choice movement; being "yeah sure, do whatever you want, just fucking leave me alone". The only reason I ever found metal even slightly interesting was the element of speed. And my god, is it ever-present here. This entire album is over in less than 30 minutes. It's one of those albums that you don't even realize that for the past fifteen minutes has been done playing. It's got your skull-fucking dual solos courtesy of Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman that make you go "WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT?!?!?!", kind of like your first... well, if you have no idea what one of the many allusions listed in that last statement could be, this album will most likely be "too loud" for you, thus Wal-Mart is having a sale on knee-pads, you best stock up. It has your badass brain-crunching power chordes that unlike Metallica, never sound redundant. And it has just about the best closer (Postmortem - Raining Blood). If you tend to dislike metal like I do, just listen and work back from there. [Note: this is the reissue, so there are two more additional tracks; just delete them if you wish]. It's lovely, ponderous music. The lyrics aren't relatable unless you <i>really</i> try, so it won't remind you of your tiresome life. It's worth it. Sure, maybe you won't be hooked on the first listen. But trust me, Belle and Sebastian come in very handy for healing some inner wounds you didn't even know you had. They're peaceful without being boring and slow.<br /><br />I have to admit, it's not my favorite Belle and Sebastian album; however, it carries that classic laidback-yet-not-boring, soft charm that is Belle and Sebastian. Favorites include: "Like Dylan in the Movies", "If You're Feeling Sinister", and "Judy and the Dream of Horses." I find the random content of their songs amusing, as well as, again, charming. I sort of get the feeling the lead singer (SORRY I don't remember these names, even if I positively adore the band and have spent weeks listening only to them - but don't underestimate my affection) doesn't open his mouth very much while he sings. He has kind of a mumbly singing thing. Most of the songs are mid-tempo songs about California, sex, or sex in California, and the rythym doesn't vary too often. Some songs were in finished form, others were merely outlines, gesture drawings, or musical scribbles mumbled on a hand-held tape recorder. It is in this song that the new guitar really shines through, and it takes the RxB to a whole new level. However, the true highlight of the album is the last track “Decrescendo.” This song is quite possibly one of the most innovative songs that the RxB have done. It lacks all forms of transitions, is genre bending, and all around absolutely phenomenal. “The Resignation” is worth getting for this song. Throw in one of the finest climaxes that the Bandits have ever done full of harmonies and the trademark Rx Bandits background screaming, and the song is pure gold. The Bandits have evolved since their last release. They seem to have drifted away from their ska/punk roots, but thats not a bad thing. Some of the songs stick to only one sound, while others jump around the board. The key to this album is fluidity.<br /><br />There are a number of standout tracks on this album. "Analog Boy" is really the sweetest track. It's guaranteed to pull you in for the long haul. This album is a long one, but rather than boring you with 15 songs out of the cookie cutter, you are given 15 songs that sound like a well thoughtout mix album. The flow is there throughout the album despite the sound changes. Fans of the same band's Hello Rockview will be familiar with LTJ's writing style and the countless "Woah oohhhh"'s in Losing Streak. For some reason, however, it seems like this band writes too many songs and doesn't finish them all to completion. I found myself simply forgetting almost all of the songs on the record. OK Computer, though, is a complicated and difficult record: an album about the way machines dehumanize people that's almost entirely un-electronic; an album by a British "new wave of new wave" band that rejects speed and hooks in favor of languorous texture and morose details; a sad and humanist record whose central moment is Thom Yorke crooning "We hope that you choke." Sluggish, understated, and hard to get a grip on, OK Computer takes a few listens to appreciate, but its entirety means more than any one song.
