Reel Big Fish - We're Not Happy 'Til You're Not Happy

We're Not Happy 'Til You're Not Happy is the fifth LP by Orange County ska/punk band, Reel Big Fish. The follow up to the band's moderately successful Cheer Up, We're Not Happy 'Til You're Not Happy' was released on April 5, 2005 on Mojo Records. Songs such as "Don't Start a Band", "One Hit Wonderful" and "Your Guts (I Hate Em)", show that Reel Big Fish haven't lost their keen sense of dark humor which was found on their earlier works. The album includes covers of Tracy Chapman's "Talkin' Bout a Revolution", Morrisey's "We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful" and Social Distortion's "Story of My Life". Both the Chapman cover and the Social D cover were chosen as the first and second singles respectively.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - Clap Your Hands Say Yeah

Combine a singer who sounds more than a little like David Byrne, some solid indie-rock tunes, blurbs on all the right blogs, and a glowing review from Pitchfork and it all adds up to quite a buzz for this Brooklyn band's debut disc. Now all they need is a record deal.

Flaming Lips- Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots

To tell you the truth, I really don't know much about this band. I was turned on to them and decided to get this interesting-looking record. It's really good actually. Check it out.

Brave Saint Saturn - The Light of Things Hoped For

This their second album, “The Light of Things Hoped For” is an album that keeps their new ideas going. Reese’s voice will always ring of Five Iron, but the band itself is making great strides in differentiating themselves from the band they know and love. On this album it is clear they had more time to devote creatively to the project, since Five Iron’s career is coming to a close. The sequencing and effects they use on this album really add to their dark rock/alternative sound. They have put out some great music so far and this album doesn’t disappoint. So dry your tears from the demise of Five Iron and come give this album a listen to.

Roper- Brace Yourself for the Mediocre

As the title of this pop-punk cd may imply, this is definately isn't what legendary Reese Roper of Five Iron Frenzy and Brave Saint Saturn fame is capable of. That said, there are still some very listenable songs and synth melodies. And come on, it's Reese.

Death Cab for Cutie- Transatlanticism

A lush, impeccably produced, musically adventurous, emotionally resonant examination of the way relationships are both strengthened and damaged by distance, the album surpasses Gibbard's other career highpoints, which is really saying something.

Suburban Legends - Rump Shaker

Even fewer octets that meld jittery ska beats with melodic blues progressions, racy glam metal guitar solos with kitschy disco melodies, playful pop dance choreography with an edgy punk rock sensibility. Few that are humorous and edgy without being crass, that are playful and young without being frivolous.

Streetlight Manifesto - Everything Goes Numb

Ex-"Keasbey Era" Catch 22 members Josh Ansley (bass), Jamie Egan (trombone) and Tomas Kalnoky (guitar, vocals & songwriting) are paired with the jazz and ska influenced playing of saxophonists Dan Ross and Jim Conti. Filling the percussive spots in the roster are Paul Lowndes (drum kit) and the last-minute addition of Shane Thompson (various percussion). Each member is as comfortable with his respective instrument as possible and it shows.

Combining countless influences, but focusing on ska, punk and reggae, the Streetlight boys command a sound all their own. Everything from Eastern European gypsy keys to tribal rhythms make it into the average Streetlight Manifesto song and it's because of this diversity that they stand on their own. Throw into the mix an uncompromising D.I.Y. ethic, a deliberate and unmistakable visual style and enough energy to destroy small countries, and you've got just a fraction of the whole of Streetlight Manifesto. Hopefully the world will appreciate the sounds of this new-but-weary group as much as band enjoy making them. Don't miss this one.

Catch 22- Keasbey Nights

What can I say, it's Keasbey Nights people! The greatest ska cd of all time, as just about any fan will say. Former frontman Tomas Kalnoky (now in Streetlight Manifesto) plays pumping guitars and sings his heart out on this one. Just downlaod it now.

Weezer- The Blue Album

Weezer's smash debut album. Way better than Make Believe, so get it now if you're a fan.

Noteable tracks:

1. My Name Is Jonas
3. The World Has Turned and Left Me Here
4. Buddy Holly
5. Undone (The Sweater Song)
6. Surf Wax America
7. Say It Ain’t So
8. In the Garage

Reel Big Fish - Why Do They Rock So Hard?

Why Do They Rock So Hard is the third full-length release by the ska/punk band Reel Big Fish. It is also their second release on Mojo Records, and the follow up to the album Turn the Radio Off. It was first released in late 1998, and the second pressing in 2001. Probally my favorite RBF album.

Notable Tracks:

  • Somebody Hates Me

  • Brand New Song

  • The Set Up (You Need This)

  • I Want Your Girlfriend To Be My Girlfriend Too

  • We Care

OKGO's self-titled debut album: releasted October 2002.
This is really great indie-rock stuff. OKGO sports an energetic synth and a unique singer that meld together for some great songs. These guys even scored a song on Madden 2003 (Get Over It).

Noteable tracks:

1. Get Over It
4. What To Do
8. There's A Fire
9. C-C-C-Cinnamon Lips
11. Hello, My Treacherous Friends

The New Pornographers - Twin Cinema

The third album from Vancouver's pop maestros continues to feature Neko Case and Dan Bejar (Destroyer), as well as new vocalists Kathryn Calder and Nora O'Connor. These songs veer more toward the rocking and the personal than the sugar of earlier works. Chief singer/songwriter A.C. Newman has absorbed not just the mechanics of classic songwriting, but the heart, while indulging his admiration of demented current bands like Fiery Furnaces and Frog Eyes.

Less Than Jake- Hello Rockview

Any LTJ fan will say that this is their best CD. They are right. Song after song is catchy, upbeat, and awesome. Powerful horns and inspired lyrics make this a great one.

The Postal Service- Give Up

The Postal Service is quite possibly the most important band of the last 5 years. Little funding yet quality music really hit home with many people, and TPS are quickly becoming very popular among the teens. Such Great Heights, anyone?

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones - Question The Answers

The forth CD from the Bosstones contains such classic tracks as “Kinder Words”, “Hell Of A Hat”, and “Pictures To Prove It”! This is probably one of their more versatile albums. A lot slower and heavier than Let's Face It, but it's still an excellent album.

Thunderbirds Are Now!- Justamoustache

Thunderbirds Are Now are an indie rock band that no one with a good taste of music should miss. With energetic drum beats and fast-paced vocals, this one is bumping enough to make your ass hurt in the morning. That said....

The New Pornographers - Mass Romantic

Reigning Vancouver melody masters Carl Newman (of Zumpano) and Daniel Bejar (Destroyer) team up for a great debut full of sharp pop hooks and consistently solid performances. Rounding out this mini-supergroup is Limblifter's Kurt Dahle, the Evaporators's John Collins, cow-punk crooner Neko Case and, interestingly, independent filmmaker Blaine Thurier. Whereas Zumpano have made a name for themselves by updating classic '60s melodic pop, the New Pornographers draw on influences that are less specific, at times coming off as new wave refugees. Standout tracks--and there are many--include the disc's grinding, keyboard-driven title track, the bouncy, rollicking singalong "The Slow Descent into Alcoholism," and "Letter From an Occupant," which may just be one of the greatest Canadian pop singles ever written.
